FMF MASTR Dx - Multiplicom

A CE-IVD validated diagnostic assay for the detection of Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) by NGS

The FMF MASTR Dx is a molecular diagnostic assay for the identification of all mutations in the Mediterranean Fever (MEFV) gene underlying FMF.

FMF is an autosomal recessive condition characterized by recurrent episodes of inflammation, including abdominal pain (peritonitis), pleuritis, and arthritis, usually with accompanying fever and occasionally a rash. Amyloidosis, leading to kidney failure, may be a serious long term complication. Although there is no cure, colchicine treatment improves the patient’s quality of life.

FMF primarily affects Mediterranean populations of Armenian, Arabic, Turkish, and non-Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry, where it occurs in 1 in 200 to 1 in 1,000 people. Causative mutations in the MEFV gene reduce the activity of the pyrin protein, leading to an inappropriate or prolonged inflammatory response. More than 200 nucleotide variants spread over all MEFV exons have been identified so far, which are responsible for the phenotypic variance seen in the disease.

When limited to the most prevalent MEFV mutations, current methods may miss disease-causing mutations. On the other hand, Sanger-based sequencing is time consuming, labor-intensive and expensive. Identification of mutations by MPS provides a faster and cost-effective approach. The FMF MASTR Dx enables clinicians to rapidly diagnose, treat and manage FMF.
